How many disciples did Jesus have?

Jesus chose twelve apostles for his closest circle, though he had many more followers called disciples.
The twelve are named in Matthew 10:2-4. Beyond the Twelve, the Gospels describe larger groups of disciples — for example, Luke 10 records Jesus sending out seventy (or seventy-two, depending on the manuscript).
So "twelve" is the answer for the inner circle of apostles, while "disciple" in a broader sense applies to a much larger number of followers.
